Match the NVR's channel count to your number of cameras, and leave room to grow: 1 to 4 cameras need a 4-channel NVR, 5 to 8 an 8-channel, and 9 to 16 a 16-channel. For a PoE kit, also check it has enough built-in PoE ports for your cameras.

Get built-in PoE
A PoE NVR has network ports that power the cameras down the same cable - one cable per camera, no separate power supplies. Make sure the number of PoE ports matches your camera count (an 8-channel NVR usually has 8 PoE ports).
Leave headroom
If there's any chance you'll add cameras, size up. An 8-channel NVR with 4 cameras today costs little more and saves a full swap later.
Check resolution and storage
Make sure the NVR supports your camera resolution (for example 8MP / 4K) and has a hard drive bay big enough for your retention. How much storage do I need?
