How to Reset a Forgotten Hikvision Password

To reset a forgotten Hikvision admin password, use the SADP tool's "Forgot Password" option: export a key file, send it to Hikvision or your supplier, then import the encrypted file they return and set a new password. Newer devices may also offer security questions or a Hik-Connect reset.

Before you start

Get the free SADP tool on a computer on the same network as the device, and keep the device powered on throughout - rebooting cancels the reset.

The SADP export/import method

  1. Open SADP, tick the locked device and click Forgot Password.
  2. Click Export to save the key file (often called DeviceKey.xml).
  3. Send that file - plus a photo of the device's label - to Hikvision support or to your supplier, with a password-reset request.
  4. They return an encrypted file. Back in SADP (still open, device still on), choose Import File and select it.
  5. Set a new strong password (8+ characters, letters and numbers) and confirm. You'll see "Reset Password Succeeded".

Important: the encrypted file is only valid for around 48 hours, and you must do it in one sitting - don't reboot the device or close SADP after exporting, or the reset fails.

Other options on newer devices

Some newer firmware lets you reset using the security questions you set during setup, or via the Hik-Connect app if the device is linked to your account. SADP will show whichever options your device supports.
